Cost of living in Turkey, like property prices, is much lower than in the UK or any other Mediterranean country.
Fresh produce, grown locally, costs a fraction of what you would need to pay in the UK. Eating out is also inexpensive. You can have a meal for £10 - £15 per person in a good restaurant or for a fraction of that amount in local eateries.
For a couple’s weekly shopping bill allocate between GBP 50 and 60 (unless buying imported foodstuffs) and you can always reduce this amount significantly by shopping at the local butcher for meat, the market for fresh produce and avoiding supermarkets altogether.
Expect to pay UK prices for petrol, mobile phone calls and the internet.
Taxes in Turkey and other property charges
- Real Estate tax: 0.1% of your property value (annual)
- Earthquake insurance: £60 - £100 per annum
- Electricity charges are 0.14 YTL per one KWH
- Environmental services: local water suppliers charge about 0.16 Turkish Lira per one m3 of water used
-
Income tax: if you rent your property out an income tax applies. You are exempt from the tax if your annual income is less then 2,400 YTL. For an income over that threshold the tax is 15%.
